1 x ST3-ST5 at the ICR. Digital Theme

Eligibility Guidance

This post is for the trainees who have completed a relevant higher degree that is PhD or MD (original research). You must have submitted your thesis by the time of application and been awarded your higher degree by the post start date.

ST5 Applicants are only eligible to apply if they have a full 12 calendar months to CCT completion at the start date of this post. Applicants who have less than 12 months to CCT completion are not eligible to apply.

Key Dates & Information

Interview date: TBC 10th September 2026 – 17th September 2026 (Subject to change)

Interview venue: Remote interviews via Microsoft teams (access to a microphone, camera and good Wi-Fi connection is essential)

Posts commence on: 1st March 2027 – ST3 entry

Interview Process

Document checking: Please have ready one form of Photo Identification for document checking.

Length of interview: 30 minutes.

Interview structure: A single station interview covering different criteria from the person specification

Preferencing Posts: For vacancies advertising multiple posts, preferencing will be made available via Oriel, more information will follow at a later stage.

Entry Grade

For ST3 entry, applicants must hold a current NTN in Medical Oncology and must be ST3 at post start date

Or

Must have completed a separate standard clinical application to Medical Oncology ST3 national recruitment (called Clinical Benchmarking) and have attended an assessment/interview for Medical Oncology ST3 in 2026 and have been found appointable.

Important information about training grades

Please note that the grade/s advertised are the grade/s at post start date. This means that applicants must be eligible to train at the advertised grade/s at the start date of the post.

Please be aware that trainees are not permitted to repeat training for the purposes of taking up a CL post and trainees are not permitted to start at a grade that is not advertised.

As an example, if a post is advertised at ST3 grade, then a current ST3 trainee who is on track to become an ST4 trainee at the post start date would NOT under any circumstances be permitted to take up the CL post at ST3 grade as this would entail repeating training that has already been completed. If you are in receipt of an ARCP at the grade you are applying to, you will not be eligible for that grade.

Clinical Benchmarking

As stated above, applicants without a Deanery Reference Number (DRN) or National Training Number (NTN) in the GMC core/specialty training programme and level to which they are applying must have been found appointable at the core/speciality training interviews in the 2026 Recruitment Round 1/Round 2 (where applicable). If no national recruitment is available at the core/specialty training programme and level to which they are applying, applicants without a DRN/NTN are ineligible. Applicants who have previously relinquished a specialty training programme must provide a ‘Support for Reapplication to a Specialty Training Programme’ form

Applicants with an NTN based inside of the region to which they are applying must provide their most recent ARCP.

Applicants who are in a dual training programme, much provide both ARCP demonstrating satisfactory progression.

Job Details

The ICR is Europe’s leading cancer research centre and has been ranked the UK’s top academic research centre, based on the results of the Higher Education Funding Council’s Research Assessment Exercise.
 
This lectureship has been awarded to the ICR through national competition and will provide high quality academic training for individuals in specialist training who can demonstrate that they have outstanding potential for development as a clinical academic.
 
The successful candidate will be supported through post-doctoral clinical academic training initiatives offered by the ICR in conjunction with the RM/ICR NIHR Biomedical Research Centre to support the pathway to an independent research career. 

Bespoke training, networking and mentorships schemes have been devised in addition to courses aimed at developing specific research skills. The latter include courses of grant writing, peer reviewing publications and writing scientific papers. The ICR has Athena Swan Silver status and is committed to the development of academics from all backgrounds.

Key features of the programme:
  • To spend 50% of their time undertaking research in one or more of the research teams/laboratories across 8 Research Divisions at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) that will fit with their own research interests and the Digital Theme of this post.
  • The clinical training component of this programme will occupy 50% of the CLs timetable, and the post holder will already have a national training number.
  • The post holder will receive generic and tumour focused training in the management of oncology patients in both an in-patient and out-patient settings including planning disease-specific care and treatment.  
  • The post-holder will be expected to understand the principles and processes of clinical research and to manage patients within clinical trials in accordance with the principles of Good Clinical Practice.
