Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in the Computer Assisted Interventional Radiology Group (CAIR) at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of the next generation of treatments, technologies and methodology into clinical care.
This three-year, ICR-employed Clinical Research Fellowship offers the opportunity to develop precision image-guided biopsy methods and undertake a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research.
The post is linked to the PCF Tactical Award and the STAMPEDE2 translational programme. The research will investigate how multimodal imaging can guide the selection and accurate sampling of biologically informative tumour regions, with the aim of improving the molecular adequacy of biopsy material.
The programme will combine technical and phantom validation, retrospective imaging–biopsy analysis and prospective clinical evaluation within approved studies. STAMPEDE2 targeted biopsy of residual disease will be a major clinical application. Whole-body MRI, image fusion, advanced CT imaging and robotic guidance will provide opportunities for methodological development and training.
The fellowship will be predominantly research based, with approximately one clinical session each week involving image-guided biopsy, ablation and relevant STAMPEDE2 procedures. There is no mandatory on-call commitment. The successful applicant will be supported to apply for PhD registration at the ICR and will gain experience in translational research, data analysis, scientific presentation and manuscript preparation.
The post would suit a clinical radiology trainee at approximately ST3 level, or equivalent, with an interest in image-guided intervention and clinical research.
To be considered, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise.
- Successful completion of FRCR Part 1.
- Relevant clinical radiology experience, as detailed in the person specification.
Previous interventional radiology exposure is desirable. Prior experience of bone biopsy, robotic guidance or multimodal image fusion is not required.
Department/Directorate Information
The post sits within the Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging and involves work across ICR and Royal Marsden sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The fellow will work with Ed Johnston, Matthew Blackledge and colleagues in imaging, interventional radiology and prostate oncology, contributing to a multidisciplinary programme of biologically informed precision biopsy.
